Kinematic Models for Design Digital Library

The Steampunk Workshop is getting involved with the Burning Man project this year and making them a kinetic sculpture. There are a few interesting articles to read on their blog about making of their “Man’s heart” sculpture.

They also have an interesting link to the KMODDL collection, Kinematic Models for Design Digital Library

“KMODDL is a collection of mechanical models and related resources for teaching the principles of kinematics–the geometry of pure motion.”

Part of this collection is the “Reuleaux Collection of Mechanisms and Machines”, of which an example is shown above. You can browse the collection by type with everything from simple gear trains and levers to complex clutches (Coupling Mechanisms) and cam mechanisms. This makes it an ideal place for budding Heath Robersons, Kinetic sculptors or serious engineers looking to build a new kind of engine or tool.
