Ball Clocks

I’ve always held a facination for ball clocks, they are not known to be particularly accurate timekeepers but the movement of the balls facinates me. I particularly like watching them when they got to 12:59 when all the balls reset back to 1.

Stuart Singer is obviously also facinated by them as he’s written a web page with everything you ever wanted to know about ball clocks.

The Swiss Horologist Malevoz has taken this idea one step further and designed and built a massive 2.2M high ball clock. It took him 5 months to build his entirely mechanical clock, the 1m pendulum releases one ball per second which accumulate to show the seconds, minutes, hours and even days and moon phase. The balls are raised back up to the top with a spiral lift.
