Coving Cutting

For a recent DIY project, I needed to replace some coving that had been removed to fit fitted wardrobes. There were just two inside joints to cut so I didn’t want to spend out on a special coving mitre box.

A bit of searching found a few videos on making your own coving mitre box but the designs seemed quite complex. But the principle was a tall piece with a 45° angle and a stop to hold the coving in place.

So I screwed a few of battens together and carefully cut at 45°.

After clamping these to the workbench with a fixed distance of 90mm the coving was slotted into the jig and sawn by following the saw against the end of the jig.

Once the angle was cut the piece was held up in the corner and there was a bit of a gap. After double checking a few things, I eventually worked out that the corner wasn’t square. This was checked with a large framing square.

So I glued the piece in place and held it with some panel pins whilst it dried.

Once dry, I filled the gap with some filler and painted it.
